SCA fic: Travel Plans
Title: Travel Plans
Fandom: DC Comics + HSM crossover AU
Relationship: hinted Peyton/Maxine, Tompay (mention only), Jusliet (mention only)
Summary: Maxine makes plans with Peyton and Bart to travel to Boston (and Cambridge)!
When Peyton had mentioned that he'd never been to Boston, Maxine immediately leapt at the chance. How had her friends never been to her hometown? Or college town, rather - she wasn't exactly from the area, but she loved Cambridge with her whole heart.
Plus, Bart had mentioned that he wanted to tour various colleges. He didn't think he was cut out for Harvard - but Maxine thought he might fit in at Tufts, Northeastern, or Boston University. As a current Harvard student, she felt it incredibly necessary to give him the full tour. (She'd already given Courtney a tour, else Court would've been dragged along too.)
They took the train down to Boston. Maxine wanted to fly, but Peyton had no idea that she was Cyclone, and she wasn't keen on telling him the truth either. As it was, she was already insanely jealous of herself. Peyton found new ways to gush about Cyclone every time a sudden burst of wind blew through his hair!
She was his dream girl, and Maxine knew she couldn't even compare to herself. Was that even possible? It sure felt like it.
Bart had shot Maxine curious glances, as if to ask her if she really wanted to let him ramble on and on about herself. Maxine had just shrugged, before boarding the train and picking three empty seats close to each other. They'd asked Tom and Sharpay to come, but Sharpay couldn't spare the weekend because of her show, and Tom felt obligated to stay in town in case enemies attacked.
Really, Maxine suspected that Tom felt inadequate whenever he walked through a college town. It was probably a reminder that Tom had dropped out, and that he wasn't a success like these kids who seemed to know what they were doing with their lives. (Maxine wanted to shake his shoulders and tell him the exact opposite, that he had his life together and she had no clue what she was doing.)
Justin also had to bail on them last-minute. Normally, this wouldn't have bothered Maxine; Justin was a busy kid, with college, work, and his volunteer work with inner-city youth. It made sense that he couldn't spare one weekend, especially since this trip was kind of a last-minute deal.
Yet he'd glared at Bart and even coughed before he asked the younger kid, "Are you sure you're not busy? Isn't there SOMETHING going on in Alabama?"
"Missouri," Bart had corrected automatically. He shot Justin a clueless look. "I don't think so? Wally hadn't asked me to babysit the kids, and my friends Tim and Conner are off doing their own thing, and Cassie's off being a Mean Girl and and---"
Justin sighed. "Just enjoy your tour. Lemme know if you need a ride back early, okay? Juliet and I have an extra room at our place, and Tom said he could spruce up the guest room since Jason's busy overseas."
Jason? Like Tom's old friend from middle school Jason? Maxine had seen him once or twice - he was the guy that scared Peyton, right? There was no other reason for Peyton to suddenly shiver and change the subject towards tomatoes.
He didn't even like tomatoes!
"I will," Bart grinned. "I just don't think I need it. College tours're gonna be awesome!"
Maxine giggled. "Plus you'll start to feel like an actual Bostonian before long."
"I thought Cambridge wasn't part of Boston." Peyton looked up from his sandwich, which was conspicuously tomato-free. "Or did the movies lie about that kind of thing?"
"No, you're right." Maxine nodded fervently. "Cambridge is right next to Boston, but it's technically a different town." It had different zip codes, it was on the opposite side of the Charles, and it even had Harvard and MIT! It was a world away from home, and it most definitely wasn't Boston. It had a completely different atmosphere.
"So you aren't technically a Bostonian."
She always felt so flustered when he teased her like that! Maxine looked down at her sweet potato fries and poked them gently. "Technically..."
"Technicalities suck," Bart interrupted. "So we're just gonna get our tickets and go, right? Any idea where we're gonna stay for the weekend? I could book us a room near Harvard if you tell us what's closest."
It was weird, listening to Bart being the mature one. Maxine half-wondered if Bart only pretended to be dumb half the time - or if he just had sudden moments of clarity that vanished with the winds. She thought about it for a second, before pulling out her phone and scrolling through the list her roommate had given her.
"There's this bed and breakfast place about a block down from campus," Maxine said after a moment. "Does that work?"
Peyton smiled. "That's fine by me. Cambridge, here we come!"
Sometimes, his enthusiasm made the whole trip worth it. Just before they took their seats, Maxine consciously sat down next to him and reached for his hand. So maybe it wasn't just the two of them heading out - Bart was their friend, and he wanted to see the city too - but it'd be fun regardless.
He had a whole world he wanted to see, and she wanted to be there, guiding him the entire time. While her duties conflicted with his dreams half the time, this instance? She knew she could be at his side, and she didn't want to mess it up. Cambridge (and Boston) would be fun, even if she had to make the whole world move for it.
